Project Management

Managing certain project requires a person to be equipped on planning, motivating, organizing, and managing or controlling procedures, resources and protocols in order to attain or achieve a particular objective or goal in daily and scientific problems.

A project is a temporary attempt for creating a product, service that is unique among its competitors or an outcome that every project manager should be aware of its beginning and end. The nature of a project is different with business operations. These are semi-permanent or permanent, and repetitive effective activities to create a product or a service. In the reality, the management of these two processes are different with each other but this requires the development of technical abilities or skills and management strategies.

The main challenge of managing a project is to attain all of the objectives or goals of the project while expecting the obstacles that a project manager will face along the management of a project. These obstacles or constraints includes time, scope, budget and quality. There is also a secondary challenge which is to integrate allocation of important inputs to reach the objectives.

There are many approaches for managing a project such as phased, incremental, interactive and lean approaches. Aside from the management methodology, they should consider carefully the overall project goals, cost, timeline and the stakeholders and participants’ responsibilities.

Before these new strategies, there is a traditional approach. This approach has a hierarchical steps. These are the following: the first one is the initiation, second is the planning and designing, third is the execution and construction, fourth is to monitor and control the project systems and finally the completion.

Some projects have all the aforementioned stages but there are also some which do not follow a step by step planning or monitoring process and other projects follow the steps 2, 3 and 4 many times.

Other approach aside from the traditional one is the PRINCE2. It is a step by step approach for a project management. This is released in 1996 as a project management method. The PRINCE2 approach combines the PROMT approach with IBM’S MITP (this help every project manager in the implementation of the whole project) strategy.

The PRINCE2 gives an approach to manage the project that has a defined framework. It emphasizes on the definition or the delivery of the project particularly the quality of the product. It defines the project as result oriented not task or activity oriented through a consensus on the products. It is about the duration of the project and provides an individual with data that will guide him for planning or control (i.e. how to collaborate with people, how to embellish and facilitate the product delivery etc.).

Critical chain project management (CCPM) is a tool for planning and facilitating project execution that is designed to cope up with the things that are inherent in a project management.

The aforementioned things are one of the different approaches or strategies for a project management. Every project manager should be imbued with the skills needed in this kind of field. He also needs to be knowledgeable with many approaches that will help him become an excellent project manager.
