Leadership in the Electronic age

Every individual experiences changes. Before it changes a person, it started from the agricultural to industrial communities. These various epochs needs various types or kinds of leadership. The person should have various knowledge of hierarchical authority, many skill sets, attitudes and many institutional incentives. This period is the early stage from an industrial society to a digital society or the so called electronic age. This is also termed as post-industrial stage. Because of this, the leadership is starting to reflect on this transition.


This new society is called an information and knowledge society. This this has four structural changes on reshaping leadership. The four changes are the following: rapid technological changes particularly the digitalization of the information and communication technology or ICT, upgraded globalization (the knowledge for production is being improved), and it becomes more distributed, in the organizations or sectors, they have accelerated movement.

In this period, a very dynamic milieu, the innovation and adaptability in leadership is very critical particularly the leaders’ abilities to communicate the correct knowledge to the people. The electronic age strategy or techniques leadership is changing which is being characterized by horizontal linkages among the different sectors and even in the different countries, particularly private entrepreneurs including the executives, civil society leader and researchers, and the government leaders.

Leadership has universal characteristics, which are still very salient nowadays like being passionate, more focused, committed etc. The leadership should have the following attitudes with also other related characteristics that can be applicable to the electronic age. Leadership really varies in many countries, including their culture and sector. These sector have a more advancement in the information and communication technology (ICT).

In this period, it needs new ways of leadership including new attitudes, skills and knowledge that is being gained by peculiar professional experiences that will respond to the new features of a society.

The leadership in the digital or electronic age has two leadership categories. The most common is the leadership in the digital or electronic age which means the leadership in any sector or institution. Leaders including the health leaders, in manufacturing and in the arts should be aware of the new opportunities or new constraints that the ICT has.

The second is the electronic or digital leadership. This refers to the leadership in the core institutions of the knowledge community. It has the three C’S such as computing, communications and content, and multi-media. The two approaches of leadership are interrelated with each other.

The electronic or digital leaders can be functionally defined by what they have contributed to the transition to the knowledge society. Their contributions consist of awareness building, operational leadership, structural leadership, and resource mobilization.

The awareness building convince the people to attend to the new technology as resources. This will help the electronic leaders to attain their goals or objectives.

The resource mobilizing people or leaders persuade people to obtain and deploy resources so that the ICT will spread widely. In the operational activities, leaders specifically the private or government. companies provide and facilitate infrastructures and applications to the knowledge society. Thus, electronic leadership innovation is changing and the required leadership skills also changes.
